      Editors' Choice 2004

The success story continues. For the fifth time in a row, a jury will be presenting the Linux New Media Award, which is officially known as the "Linux New Media Award presented at Linux World Expo Frankfurt" this year. As the new, extended name suggests, the winners will be receiving their awards at the Frankfurt trade fair center during this year's Linux World Expo Germany.

The official award ceremony is taking place at 6.30 pm on Wednesday October 27 2004 as part of the evening event for exhibitors.

Just like in previous years, the editors in chief of all the Linux New Media AG publications, Linux-Magazin, LinuxUser, EasyLinux, Linux Magazine International, and the magazines from Romania, Poland, and Brazil put together a top-class jury whose members include Open Source personalities, some of the industry's leading IT managers, and Linux authors. No less than 150 people joined in the voting, including Jon 'maddog' Hall, Martin Michlmayer (Debian Project Leader), Alan Cox (kernel developer), Bruce Perens (Open Source guru), Hong Feng (Free Software Foundation China), Klaus Knopper (Knoppix Project), and Gael Duval (Mandrake).

This year's contenders were a total of 72 projects and organizations in ten categories including: the X.org project, the new free X Server, newcomers Ubuntu Linux and Yoper, the Helix Player by Realsoft, laptops from IBM, Acer, Dell and HP, and printers by Kyocera and OKI.

The Special Award category always raises a lot of interest. This is a merit award given by the jury to corporations, organizations or individuals for outstanding service to Open Source. As the vote comes from jury members who really understand the way the Linux Community ticks, the winner of this award really has something to be proud of.

This will be the third year that the Special Award has been presented. In 2002, IBM took the award for investing billions of dollars on Linux-based research and development, and for its commitment to Open Source which gave Linux a decisive boost. One year later, the award went to the Free Software Foundation for its ongoing battle to promote free software.
